Together with Sebastian Schutte, I developed a novel method for causal inference in spatiotemporal event data called Matched Wake Analysis (mwa). The approach leverages sliding spatiotemporal window (wakes) with a statistical matching strategy to test causal relationships in geographically highly resolved, event-level data.
We wrote a corresponding R package that computationally efficiently implements the methodology in a user-friendly interface. The package is available on CRAN and on our GitHub repository, for details on the method please refer to Schutte & Donnay (2014).
Together with colleagues in computer science we also developed an interactive visualization tool that allows to explore the approach for three published studies leveraging the methodology. The tool was evaluated in a paper that appeared as Mayer et al. (2024) in Computers & Graphics and is available here: matchedwake.com
